The first time Wheeler District threw a holiday market, the Ferris Wheel was the headline. The 2025 listing for Wheeler Wonderland opened with "For the first time ever, the Wheeler Ferris Wheel is opening its gates in the winter," and promised "sparkling Ferris Wheel lights" along with pop-up vendors on Spoke Street. It ran Friday and Saturday, December 12 and 13, from 2 to 8 p.m., and the listing called it "ONE WEEKEND ONLY!" in capital letters. You can still see that copy on the 2025 Marketspread event page.
This year it's back on a different plan. Wheeler Wonderland 2026 runs for three weekends, all in daylight, at the same address both years, 1737 Spoke St. This year's description promises holiday shopping, seasonal treats and local vendors along Spoke Street. For anyone who lives within walking distance, the district's holiday season now runs on the street's afternoon schedule, not on the Wheel's light show.
The 2025 pitch made sense. The Wheel is the district's best-known landmark. It's the old Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel, bought on eBay in 2008 and refurbished with more than $1 million before it opened over the Oklahoma River on July 4, 2016. It stands more than 100 feet above the water and carries 20 gondolas of six riders each.
In 2022 it got a lighting redesign by Stephen Tyler and Nathan Hendrix. According to Wheeler District's write-up of the project, the job took 3,000 feet of new steel cable and nearly 60,000 LED bulbs, and the new display uses less than half the energy of the old one. Ferris Wheel Operations Manager Arissa Hayes told the district blog the team could now "change the light show with the click of a button."
The 2-to-8 p.m. window in mid-December ran from afternoon into evening, and the listing advertised those lights. The OU Daily's holiday events roundup listed it as a Friday-and-Saturday local-vendor shopping event, 2 to 8 p.m.
The 2026 schedule stretches the market across more days and ends it before evening. Every date is a Saturday or Sunday, and there's no Friday this time.
| Weekend | Days | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving weekend | Sat., Nov. 28 and Sun., Nov. 29 | Noon to 5 p.m. |
| Second weekend | Sat., Dec. 5 and Sun., Dec. 6 | Noon to 5 p.m. |
| Third weekend | Sat., Dec. 12 and Sun., Dec. 13 | Noon to 5 p.m. |
Add it up and the shift is easy to see. In 2025 the market had two days of six hours each, 12 hours in all. In 2026 it has six days of five hours each, 30 hours in all, or two and a half times as much shopping time, all of it in the afternoon. The 2026 Marketspread listing says the pop-ups "are back for the holiday season" and promises "three festive weekends of holiday shopping, seasonal treats, and local vendors along Spoke Street."
The Wheel has its own calendar. TravelOK describes it as seasonal, April to November, and the district's ticket page now reads "Closed for the season through April." So the Wheel is a backdrop at this year's market, not one of the things to do. If you've promised someone a ride, call the Wheeler Ferris Wheel ticket office at 405.655.8455 before you head out.
One date carries over. December 12 and 13 were the only Wonderland days in 2025, and they're the closing weekend in 2026. That weekend is now the end of the run.
With the Wheel closed, the market's pull comes from the storefronts around it, which are there every week of the year. Wheeler District lists the 2026 event as "Three Weekends of Holiday Fun on Spoke Street," and the copy talks about "local businesses" and "holiday cheer throughout the District." The pop-up vendors are a seasonal layer on top of the businesses below, which are on Spoke and Wheeler streets all year.
The Wheeler District business directory puts these within a block or two of the stalls:
That's coffee, sushi and pizza within a short walk of the vendors, which helps with a five-hour window that covers lunch and the middle of the afternoon. Clarity Coffee and AKAI Sushi share the 1801 Wheeler Street building, a short walk from the event's Spoke Street address.
Clay & Thistle Studio has a workshop one week before the pop-ups open. Its Sculptural Flower Vase Workshop is Saturday, November 21, from 2 to 4:30 p.m., at $85 per person. Participants make a ceramic vase with their own floral details. Registration is on the studio's workshop page. A vase made that afternoon at 1714 Spoke Street is about as local as a holiday gift from this street gets.
Spreading the market over six days changes how a neighbor can use it. One weekend meant one chance. Three weekends let you shop on Thanksgiving weekend, come back the first week of December, and pick up whatever you missed on the closing weekend.
The details that make a casual visit easy are already on the books:
Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, so the first Wonderland weekend is the Saturday and Sunday right after it. That makes it an easy outing with visiting family: shopping on Spoke Street, coffee on Wheeler Street, a photo at the "O-K-C" letters, and the Wheel in the background, closed for the season through April.
Our summer look at Wheeler District's weekly calendar followed a district whose plans clustered on two walkable blocks and mostly happened at night. Wonderland fits that pattern on location, since it stays on Spoke Street within the same short walk. The hours are new. From November 28 through December 13, the busiest stretch of the district's weekend moves to the middle of the afternoon, and the 2025 version's evening hours and Wheel-centered pitch have given way to more days of shopping on Spoke Street.
For neighbors, that's a busier Spoke Street at lunchtime on six weekend days and more reasons to walk over between noon and 5 p.m. For anyone outside the district who knows Wheeler mostly as the Wheel lit up over the river, this year's market shows the neighborhood's street-level side. You can find more about the area on our Wheeler District neighborhood page.
If you're on Spoke Street for one of these weekends and want to know more about the homes near those storefronts, Laura Loves Houses knows this part of the riverfront block by block. Schedule a Consultation, and we can walk the district before or after the market closes at 5 p.m.
